Ok - so I finally started the thread. I am thinking initially of a townhouse and then when it is a permanent move a house. Suggestions from group regarding best areas to peruse? Of course must be within reasonable distance of UO.

We've half-heartedly discussed buying something down there too, not enough to look into specific areas yet though. I will be excited to hear others ideas!

I would be interested in a townhouse or condo. Or, I suppose a (gulp) over 55 community of houses. Just zero outdoor maintenance.

DH has talked about getting a small place to fix up, he's extremely handy with building/renovating. There's the issue of leaving it be or renting it when we would not be there, though. If we move, there's likely no need as a flight would be just about an hour. Cathleen I just read an article about the mass emigration from California that was nearly 140,000 in a year to other states such as Arizona, Nevada and Texas; it mentioned New York being the bookend from taxes. It's horrible. Minnesota, NY and NJ were still ahead of California in property taxes. I hate the idea of leaving but the amount we'd save is enough of a push. I hope somethang works out for you to sell your home and find a balance between the two states.

Hey guys Yes, Merry McSparkles Grimes - really the tax situation in NY is going to kill me. Need to have a game plan because it is not reasonable to expect these crazy property tax rates any more. Areas that I routinely check are Windermere, Doctor Phillips, and Lake Nona. Lake Nona is a bit further east than I would like. Windermere looks nice - townhouse prices are not bad, but home prices are high. I heard the traffic there is awful. (can it be worse than LI/NYC? lol) Doctor Phillips looks good - townhouse prices are a little higher. I have heard mixed reviews on Doctor Phillips - somebody told us to stay away from that area. (however, they didn't give a reason so I keep looking). I have been told to look in Winter something. Not sure if it was Winter Park or Winter Garden. I am not quite there for an over 55 community, but by the time it is permanent I may be. I figure a townhouse is the way to go at first to make sure I like the area. Plus it will give me somewhere to escape to until the move is permanent. Every time I am down in Orlando I pick the brains of some of the people we have met. Our last Uber driver told us he was a real estate agent in Orlando.

Cathleen Yeah, Lake Nona is near the airport so that could be trafficky to get across - but I don't know. What I do know is that everyone talks about I-4 as though it is like the Cross Bronx Expressway at its worst. All the time. That scares me. Of course, folks could be exaggerating. ChuckPlagmann? I just realized this moment that I've never driven in Orlando. Taxis and rides from a friend only.

What I do know is that everyone talks about I-4 as though it is like the Cross Bronx Expressway at its worst. I'm going with a yes on that. CBE congestion I-4 always looks a mess. We avoid it at all costs when there. Year round tourism and added vehicles are solid thangs to remember when looking for a place, too.

DudleyDo--- Duuuuuude! Everyone ELSE is doing it!!! Sidebar for everyone else: We've been talking about potentially buying a second home here in MT and turning it into a rental. The more fun idea would be to purchase a second home. In Orlando. Preferably next door to all you folks.

While that list did have some great choices and areas picked out, here's a little insight from a born and bred local.
Windemere and Belle Isle: Highly overrated and a bit snooty. There are also places that try and use a loose "windemere" placement so they can charge you more for what you're getting. You can get that same thing you're looking for in Dr. Phillips and more than likely at the price you're supposed to be paying. I've also noticed that Belle Isle likes to put "noise pollution" signs up and enforce them. While this is something younger me would be affected by, the reason why me now is bothered by it is due to principal. On a positive note though, the houses out there are gorgeous (I went to a couple parties out there in my hey days) and it's also where the celebrities live.
Bithlo/Buena Ventura Lakes/Oak Ridge: Don't. Just don't. You want Bithlo, go to Hunter's Creek or the general Kissimmee area outside of BVL. That being said, don't go to BVL. I grew up there and while it isn't the worst place, it's steadily going downhill. There's culture out there, sure. A ton of it and I grew up in it. I'm an honorary Puerto Rican from what's known as "San Juanito". There's also crime though and it has way too much of that "small town" drama. Also, Bithlo is out in the boonies and trash. Tbh, none of these should be on the list of "best Orlando areas to live" outside of the realm of "affordability".
Hunter's Creek: Decent area, but the bad part is that it gets BVL and St. Cloud's overflow. Both of those aren't the greatest areas (which is funny when I see it listed on here). Both areas are affordable living, but remember there's almost always a reason for that.
Poinciana: Nicer and a bit more on the affordable end, but Poinciana is also out of the way. Which isn't too bad on the grand scheme, but still something to keep in mind.
St. Cloud: That small town drama I mentioned also goes into St. Cloud. If I had to choose between St. Cloud and BVL, I'd go St. Cloud. It was the first area I lived on my own at a great complex right next to the Turnpike. Something to keep in mind with this city is that the deeper you go into St. Cloud, the more backwoodsy it gets.
Hopefully this gives a little more local insight rather than a list made from a website. Statistics tell a lot, sure; locals always know better though.

Cathleen or anyone else wanting to make the move to Florida The Dis Unplugged has a series of Podcasts that talk about moving to the Florida area as well as some info on their website on the subject. I only watched/listened to their first Podcast so far, but got some useful info. Of course they mostly focus on Disney stuff, but it's all the same areas close to the parks www.wdwinfo.com/moving-to-the-magic/
