The official ESTA site ESTA.CDP.DHS.GOV only apply using the official site, others charge you extra to apply. An ESTA is valid for two years, from the purchase date. As long as your passport doesn't expire during that period. Cost of an ESTA is $21 per application. (increase effective May 2022) I have also just found out, the ESTA only needs to be valid for the day you arrive in the USA not the full duration. Also if you have travelled on your current ESTA previously, you are able to enter immigration as a US citizen, this can save a lot of time, especially at MCO. Use the electronic machines, then take the print out to the immigration officer, rather than waiting in first time visitors to deal with an immigration officer only.

Dan_Mol Thank you for this, as I didn't know that on second ESTA visit could go in US Citizen queue. That's handy! Think all I need to do on my ESTA is update hotel details to CBBR.

They don't publicise that going through as US citizen much. That would have saved us some time in the past (& possibly future).

I didn't know about the validity thing. I had always assumed it had to be valid for the whole duration. Good to know!!

JFK have lanes for returning ESTA holders which filter into the US citizen line. January when I returned to MCO was a officer directing returning ESTA holders to follow US citizen lines. MCO this may not be permanent, worth asking if long lines.

When we visited last year we were able to use the new automated machines for the first time as my parents and me had separate ESTAs (can't use if more than 2 on one ESTA), as normally we'd have just had one for three of us in past. It was perfect, we literally got through in under 10 minutes. Hopefully as quick again!

May 2022 the price of an ESTA increased from $14 to $21 - Updated first post to reflect price change!
Still last two years, existing ESTA doesn't expire until original date but any new ones will be at the $21 price increase.
